Auto Shipping and Insurance

Insurance is an absolute must when you begin the process of shipping a car. Your car will most likely be insured against theft and damage by the auto transport service. You will also likely have your own insurance for the transportation. Your car insurance company might cover insurance costs for the transportation. Not all car insurance companies will offer this service, so inquire with your car insurance company. Remember to clarify if the car transport company's insurance is primary or secondary to your own insurance. When the insurance and shipping documents are being drafted, ask to include if damages will be deductible.

Personal items should not be left behind in the car for transportation. Not only is it not allowed under transportation law (your car transport company can refuse to ship your car is it contains your personal belongings) but the carrier will also not be responsible for any theft or damage to your personal belongings in the car. In any case, leaving your personal belongings increases the chance of damage to your car's undercarriage. The carrier's insurance will not cover any damage to the car that occurs as a result of items being left behind in the vehicle.

Your home or personal insurance policy might cover items that may be left behind. Contact your personal insurance company to verify if coverage is provided.
